North Carolina Career (1981–1984)
Before the NBA: three seasons at Chapel Hill, a national championship as a freshman and the jump shot that started everything.
Jordan went on to play basketball at the University of North Carolina for the legendary coach Dean Smith. As a freshman, he scored the jump shot that gave N.C. the 1982 NCAA championship — one of the most famous shots in college basketball history.
In three seasons at Carolina he averaged 17.7 points per game, was voted College Player of the Year in 1984, and made himself eligible for the NBA Draft as a junior. In 3,000-point terms? No — in Jordan terms: the rest is history, and it began in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels years produced a 1,788-point career, a .540 field-goal percentage and the 1984 consensus National Player of the Year award. See the full college statistics or browse the UNC photo gallery.
